May have the solution to lower mortality in cages

BioXtraction AS, en del av Aggrator sitt Startup program, er i gang med et spennende prosjekt for å styrke helsen til oppdrettsfisk gjennom sitt egenutviklede fiskefôr. Aggrator besøkte nylig Senter for Fiskeforsøk ved NMBU, hvor et dedikert team kjører forsøk på ungfisk (smolt) av laks for å kartlegge helseeffektene av dette unike fôret.

Founder Sigve Sørensen and BioXtraction have identified substances from natural sources that have the potential to improve fish health and growth in aquaculture. These substances have now been adapted into a final feed recipe, developed in close collaboration with FôrTech and the Faculty of Life Sciences at NMBU . The goal is to document the health benefits and sustainable gains of this specialized feed.

The importance of proper feed for salmon welfare

Sørensen explains why this project is so important for the welfare of the fish:

When the balance of nutrients is not optimal, you get problems such as fat around the heart and between the internal organs. In short, when the feed is wrong, the fish becomes in poor physical shape.

Proper feed that supports the health and welfare of the fish produces robust individuals, which contributes to reduced mortality among the fish in the cages.

The project receives support from Akershus County Council. program “Research and innovation in business,” which BioXtraction secured through a tough competition with many strong applicants. This funding has enabled BioXtraction to take important steps on the path towards verifying the efficacy of their product.
