The United States has made it crystal clear that the democracies of the continent must begin taking greater responsibility for their own defense. Globalization of world trade in its current form also no longer seems so interesting anymore, now that the shale boom has made the country the world's largest producer of oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, we have another nuclear power, Russia, with seemingly two geostrategic main goals to achieve, whatever the cost. The first goal is to secure its borders within what was the Soviet Union\u2019s sphere of influence. The second goal is to secure its economic future by making Europe dependent on the gas and oil that the country produces, either through direct sales or via Belarus and, mainly, Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All this comes on top of a situation that was already worrying for the EU in competition with the USA and China. According to the report \u00abThe future of European competitiveness\u00bb delivered by Mario Draghi in November, the EU has long been lagging behind in technology and innovation. The continent is also portrayed as dependent on the resources and technology of other world powers when it comes to both fossil and renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the same report, the EU needs annual investments of 800 billion Euros if the region is to remain competitive in the future. This is already before the recent events surrounding the war in Ukraine showed that all of Western Europe must increase its defense budget to much higher amounts than were envisioned just a few months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation demanded action, and the response has been remarkable. Recently, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, launched one initiative after another in an attempt to try to correct the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the so-called \u00abomnibus package,\u00bb sustainability reporting is to be simplified and apply to fewer companies. At the same time, she will spend many hundreds of billions of euros on building up critical areas such as artificial intelligence, defense, renewable energy, and clean industry. It is also proposed that the sums used to build up the defense industry should not count towards the rules regarding budget deficits and sovereign debt that EU members must comply with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this is truly extraordinary. The scale of the money flood that all these initiatives together mean is hard to imagine. After a period of high interest rates and a dearth of capital for new business initiatives, the money flow could be fully restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is very good news for Norwegian entrepreneurs, innovative companies and investors, for several reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, analysts doubt that there are enough projects in Europe right now that could absorb such large amounts of capital. Start-up companies and innovative projects in the most critical areas for the EU\u2019s future therefore may face less competition for these funds if they act quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, the interpretation of projects around artificial intelligence and defense can be quite broad. Many projects and start-up companies have some form of artificial intelligence as part of their value proposition. Initiatives that were originally intended for civilian use, such as drones, autonomous vehicles, or robots, can easily be modified for military use or presented as projects with military potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirdly, an easing of the rules for sustainability reporting means one less barrier to consider for startups when negotiating with larger companies about business or investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe has woken up to a new geopolitical situation that has changed rules and priorities. A money flood that we have not seen since the pandemic is on its way into the productive economy, and probably for a longer period. If the bureaucrats in Brussels do not change their mind when the war in Ukraine ends, this means a historic opportunity for innovative companies and entrepreneurial ventures. They can contribute with profitable or potentially profitable initiatives to the building of a much stronger Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
